Concepts of Cad-integrated Finite Element Analysis

چکیده
A CAD system contains only part of the information required for structural analysis, namely, geometrical data. In order to generate a finite element model, the CAD geometry needs to be simplified, e.g. by dimensional reduction. Furthermore, information on boundary conditions and loading needs to be supplied. These tasks cannot be performed solely on the basis of a geometrical model, but require engineering expertise. Therefore, direct automatic transition from a CAD model to a finite element model is not feasible. However, finite element analysis can be greatly aided by embedding in a CAD-like environment. Such an integrated FEM software needs to provide three distinct kinds of models: (a) a structural model, composed of the simplified geometry and boundary and loading conditions, as well as load case information; (b) a series of specifically tailored finite element meshes for each of the load cases; (c) a result evaluation model. Furthermore, the finite element analysis itself should provide means of convergence control and adaptivity. We discuss suitable data structures for the three kinds of models, strategies for the construction of these models, efficient algorithms, and practical applications.

متن کاملA formal theory for estimating defeaturing-induced engineering analysis errors
ABSTRACT Defeaturing is a popular CAD/ CAE simplification technique where ‘small or irrelevant features’ are suppressed within a CAD model for speeding-up downstream processes, especially finite element analysis. Unfortunately, defeaturing also results in analysis errors that are not easily quantifiable within the current theoretical framework. In this paper, we provide a rigorous theory for sw...
متن کاملA two-dimensional resistance simulator using the boundary element method
A new resistance simulator for extraction of the parasitic parameters from VLSI layout is presented. The calculation of resistor network is based on the boundary element method (BEM). The computational results indicate that the BEM has an advantage over the finite difference method (FDM) and the finite element method (FEM). Since only discretized equations on the boundary of solved domain need ...
متن کاملMixed-element decomposition method for three-dimensional grid adaptation
A new method for adaptive tessellation of threedimensional (3-D) grids is presented. A mixed-element decomposition method is introduced for local refinement of fully unstructured grids, consisting of tetrahedra and octahedra. The method preserves the shape of the elements of the initial grid and therefore the element quality. Furthermore, local anisotropies of the initial grid are preserved. Th...
